IP v6  Networking - DECnet Phase IV


Digital Equipment’s DECnet Phase IV uses addresses that are only 16 bits long: 6 bits for the network part and 10 for the host part. DECnet solves the mapping problem the other way around: the Ethernet chip is reprogrammed to ignore its burned-in address and instead uses a special MAC address that includes the full DECnet address. DECnet Phase IV addresses must be manually configured. Figure 1-3 shows how the DECnet address fits inside the Ethernet MAC address.
